A ground-fault circuit interrupter outlet is an electrical outlet that detects dangerous ground faults and cuts power within milliseconds to prevent electrocution, required by building code in bathrooms and other wet areas.
A GFCI outlet (ground-fault circuit interrupter) is a specialized electrical outlet that monitors for ground faults, which occur when electricity escapes from its normal path toward ground. If the outlet detects an imbalance in electrical current flow, it shuts off power in a fraction of a second, preventing potentially fatal shocks. This makes GFCI outlets essential in bathrooms, where water and electricity coexist.
Connecticut building code requires GFCI protection for all outlets within six feet of a sink, including bathroom vanities, and for outlets serving countertop surfaces. They are also mandated near tubs, showers, and other areas where moisture is likely. A GFCI outlet looks similar to a standard outlet but has two buttons on its face: "Test" and "Reset." You can press Test to confirm the outlet is working properly, and Reset to restore power after the outlet has tripped.
Unlike standard outlets, which only have a fuse or breaker protecting them from overloads and short circuits, GFCI outlets specifically guard against ground faults that standard protection might miss. A single GFCI outlet can also protect all standard outlets downstream on the same circuit, offering broader coverage. Many remodelers install individual GFCI outlets at each bathroom location rather than relying on circuit-level protection, giving homeowners greater control and functionality.
